What is the Commuter Challenge? May 14th – 20th

The MassCommuter Challenge, hosted by  MassCommute, is a friendly and FREE competition encouraging participants to include bicycling into lifestyle travel.   As the signature, state-wide bicycle commuting event of Bay State Bike Week, participation is open to anyone who lives, works or attends school in Massachusetts.

The Challenge is a call to Bay State folks  — to register with us, ride your bike for some (or all!) of trips to work, school, errands, social activity or physical fitness, and then compare how your company, campus or town ranks against other participants.  If travel for some trips seems farther than you’re willing to pedal, rides to your local mass transit station or bus stop count too!

How to participate

Participation is FREE and open to anyone who lives, works or attends school in Massachusetts.   INDIVIDUAL and TEAM registration is open through 5pm on Friday, May 20th.  Remember, whether or not you associate with a workplace or school “team” you are still eligible to participate in the MassCommuter Challenge raffle to be drawn at the Challenge wrap up party, the Bike Bash on Wednesday, May 25th.

How do you win?

There are three competitive categories: “company”, “educational institution” and “municipality”.  The “company” and “educational institution”  categories are divided up by population size (see below), and are based on where you might work or go to school.  Teams within these type and size categories competing against other similar sized entities.  If you register as a member of a workplace or campus team, all mileage pledged as work/ school commuting will go towards your team.  In addition, ALL mileage that you pledge (commuting, utilitarian travel, social activities and physical activity) will go go  towards your home town.

Your workplace/ school team wins in your size category by logging the most miles biked for trips to work or school.  Your hometown wins by logging the most miles pledged for all trips.  You can keep track of team standings with the real-time, MassCommuter Challenge LEADER BOARD.
